  • Mendocino National Forest

If you are looking for solitude and relaxation, the Mendocino National Forest may be for you. The forest encompasses nearly one million acres just a three-hour drive north of San Francisco and Sacramento in northwestern California. It is the only one of California's 18 national forests not crossed by a paved road or highway. The rugged landscape offers a wealth of recreational opportunities - camping, hiking, backpacking, boating, fishing, hunting, nature study, photography and off-highway vehicle (OHV) travel.

Approximately 197,000 acres on the southern end of the forest are within the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument. The Monument was designated by President Obama in July 2015.
